Description
Forest Service Compass, aluminum with folding 3 1/2 inch brass sights. The raised compass ring is graduated in degrees, variation plate reading by vernier to 5 minutes. The improved needle about 2 5/8 inches with jeweled centre and stop. Beveled ring on compass box graduated to degrees and numbered in quadrants, with sighting mark at each guadrant, and knurled edge for revolving azimuth. There is a pendulum clinometer graduated in degrees for 90 degrees in each direction. The base of the compass is 4 X 4 inches, all four edges bevelled (the edges bear some scars); two edges graduated as a protractor, one edge graduated to inches and eighths, representing chains on a scale of one inch to a mile, the other edge graduated to inches and tenths. Two spirit levels on the base. A diagram of township numbering is on the underside of the compass. There is a ball joint and socket for Jacob staff or tripod mounting. The leather case with shoulder strap is missing. The Forest Service compass is used largely in topographical work. It is light and portable. The variation of the needle is set off by revolving the raised compass ring by means of a slotted screw projecting through the side of the compass box, which also serves as a set screw. The beveled ring can be used forturning right angles or for sighting vertical angles by placing the edge of the base on a level surface. The unit weighs just one pound. The seller will ship insured at his expense to a domestic buyer. A purchase by a foreign buyer will require separate negotiation re shipping. I find this compass listed in my oldest K&E Catalog of 1913. I may have been listed prior to that. In those early days it was not uncommon that engineers in the field designed equipment as they liked it. This became a government pattern that was used for many years. The number on the bottom of the instrument 1885 may be significant, but maybe not. Inv 2447 Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
