The set is done in the huge, really massive, European size and has tremendous weight. The set has a full table service for 12 and a generous amount of serving pieces including a fish set, a full sized ladle and a large platter or stuffing spoon. The set is beautifully crafted with a high finish on the bowls and the tines and a matte finish on the handles. The handles are done in a handsome design of swirls with scroll and shell decoration at the tip. All pieces are monogrammed on the reverse with a fancy monogram composed of the letters M and P intertwined. The monogram is surrounded by elegant raised scroll decoration done in wonderful high relief. The original all of the knives would have had silver plated carbon steel blades. The old knife blades have been replaced with stainless steel blades. These modern blades make the set much more useable. The blades were professionally replaced. All of the blades are tight and perfectly aligned. The set includes: 12 dinner knives: 10 1/8 inches 12 dinner forks: 8 1/2 inches 12 luncheon knives: 8 5/8 inches 12 luncheon forks: 7 inches 12 large soup spoons or place spoons: 8 5/8 inches 12 teaspoons: 5 7/8 inches 12 demitasse spoons: 4 3/8 inches 1 gravy ladle: 7 3/4 inches 1 platter spoon or stuffing spoon: 10 1/4 inches 1 punch ladle: 12 1/8 inches 1 fish knife: 11 1/4 inches 1 fish fork: 9 3/4 inches 1 bread knife or ice cream knife: 11 1/8 inches 1 serving fork: 9 7/8 inches Each piece is hallmarked with a maker’s mark of G & S and the Diana’s head mark for Austrian 800 purity silver. This mark was used between the 1886 to 1922. The knives are also marked Stainless on the blades. The condition is excellent. It appears that this set has been used very little if at all. It has only the most minor of surface abrasions and a couple of tiny dings on the ends of a few of the knife handles. There are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs. The weight is 4354.6 grams or 152.6 ounces. This does not include the weight of the 24 knives because of their stainless steel blades. This set comes with an optional, free, bonus box as seen in the photographs. The box is a felt lined wooden box. The box has surface wear but is effective in protecting the set against tarnishing. This box is free, and is not considered to be part of the value of this auction. If you do not want the box let us know and we can reduce shipping fees accordingly.
