Wood Antique Banjo signed & dated 1887 Pearl Inlay' Description This is a nice old somewhat ornate old custom made A. O. Wood “skin head” banjo is circa 1887 (has an 1887 patent date on it) in nice shape for it’s age. According to one reference I found on-line the Woods Banjo Co. was based in Falmouth, ME and is circa this same patent date. This banjo has some nice inlay and is signed along with having a patent date on it. I know nothing about instruments (or music for that matter) but have been told by a friend that this has a 20 inch scale length and is interesting because it has a shorter neck than usual. He says the standard neck is 12 ½ inches and that this one has an 11 inch neck. Overall length is 29 inches and although this banjo is fully functional, it will need to be “set up” allowing for humidity in the place of it’s new home. My friend has put a pencil mark where bridge should be set and the bridge is taped inside the back.  He says the new owner will have to “tension the hoop, and do the bridge to it” (whatever all that means). He says in drier climates the tension will need to be loosened and that a big part of these adjustments is because this is an older type skin head banjo.
