Co. toy child's miniature sewing machine. The style is named Liberty, which written on the bottom front. This unusual Foley & Williams sewing machine was marketed as a machine that was reliable enough to be used by adults, yet small enough to be used by children. This machine, produced by the Foley and Williams Co. of Chicago, dates from before the turn of the 20th century, in the 1880's. At first glance you will notice a similarity in the design of the rounded upper arm to that of the popular Wilcox and Gibbs sewing machine. But the F & W is a significantly smaller sewing machine, marketed both as a child's machine and for family mending, and unlike the Wilcox and Gibbs, the F & W was produced for just a short period of time Most sewing machine companies in the past produced a "toy sewing machine" for the little girl to learn on. Often times these were given as a premium upon purchase of a regular machine. It has a simple hand shank which has nice oak wood handle. The tension assembly and the spool pin is original. Hand mechanism turns easily. Item is in good condition. This example shows some nickel loss and a bit of paint loss & rust on the base, but the floral decoration and the Liberty decal are good. There is rusting. This is being sold as is right out of the local estate where it came from. Measures approximately 4.5" wide and 7.5" high and 3" deep. Shipping insurance is strongly recommended.
