Description
ANTIQUE COCONUT & SILVER RUM CUPS This pair of distinguished drinking vessels came with a group of Hawaiian coin jewelry creations all dating from 1886. The jewelry collection included bracelets, necklaces, broaches, belt buckles, and other treasured ornamental heirlooms. Although I have no papework to prove their provenance the verbal history associated with these incredible artifacts is as follows: “The coconuts were collected in the South Pacific and taken to England where they were fabricated into drinking vessels with pure silver rims and bases and then given to a member of the Royal Family in Hawaii around 1850 and have been passed down through the years and became part of a private collection along with the jewelry in 1886.”The larger of the two is 3” tall and 2 1/2” in diameter at the rim and has the date 1813 engraved lightly on the rim. There are no hallmarks present on either piece. The smaller cup has a scalloped silver rim and measures 2 1/ 2” tall and 3 1/2” at the rim. They are in amazing condition for their age with one minor pressure crack on the smaller piece that is barely visible to the naked eye.I have never seen another cup of this nature offered in The Islands and the mystery of their arrival can only be left to the imagination along with the shadows of a distant past. The purchaser will pay $50 for all handling and shipping fees and this price includes full insurance which is mandatory.
