Visit both of our stores: Ellis Antiques and our new store catering to stylish gals on a budget Vintage Vixen Jewelry! Offered here is an ebony, pre-ban ivory and brass sextant by the famed manufacturer of maritime navigational instruments, Spencer Browning & Co. This beautifully made sextant has a ribbed brass index arm which measures 9 5/8 inches long on the index arm. The handle is made from ebony. The index arm clamp and tangent screw are complete. The vernier scale and arc read from right to left and are made of pre-ban ivory. All fittings are made of brass and appear to function properly. The engravings on the arc and scale are crisp. The scale and arc read from right to left from 0 to 20 arc minutes and from -2 to 112 degrees (0-100 numbered). There are two shades (green and red) for the horizon mirror and three shades (two red and one green) for the index mirror. The label on the center of the instrument reads: Spencer. Browning & Co.: Late Spencer. Browning & Rust. On the backside of the sextant there is a small ivory plaque with the model number - a solitary number "5". There is slight pitting/oxidation on the brass fittings and two *small* stains on the ivory vernier scale. We have not tried to clean this instrument in any way and we would say that the condition is EXCELLENT. The original case measures approximately 13" long, 11 1/2" wide and 3 7/8" high. Solid mahogany case is in excellent original condition & finish. There is a 1" by 3/4" triangular chip missing from the right lower corner of the case. Original lock is present without a key; case also has original brass hinges, inset brass escutcheon & hook & eye hardware. There are two wood blocks inside the case that have come loose. Their original purpose was as a holder for one of the fittings as well as to keep the instrumnet and its parts secure & stable within the case. COMPANY HISTORY AND DATE OF INSTRUMENT  We are NOT experts on maritime navigational instruments! We believe this sextant to be dated around 1840-1850. Spencer Browning Rust worked in London from 1724 to 1840 when the name was changed to Spencer Browning & Co. after the death of Ebenezer Rust. The successor, Spencer Browning had offices at a number of addresses, including Cornhill and Wapping High Street, London. They were in business until 1870. They had an early dividing machine and inscribed arcs for others. Ref: Gloria Clifton, Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 (London, 1995), p. 261. As this reference states, after 1840 the name of the company changed to Spencer. Browning & Co. The label reads "Late Spencer. Browning & Rust," which we believe to be a notification to customers of the name change before the maker's reputation had fully transfered to the new brand. Our understanding is the company changed the construction of their sextants in the third and fourth quarter of the 19th century to a metal frame with platinum arc and scale - as opposed to ebony/ivory. Inside the box there is a certificate of authenticity from the maker as well as a dealer stamp. The certificate explains the company's reputation led their products to be imitated, often under confusingly similar company names. The mark of authenticity for this particular brand is a small inscription; the CONNECTED, "SBR" initials engraved into the ivory vernier arc. Shipping insurance is strongly recommended. This item is genuine pre-ban elephant ivory and we certify that we have legal possession of it, and are legally able to sell it in the United States. All our ivory is legal pre-ban ivory, imported into the U.S. before the ban. We only ship this and other ivory items to the United States. QUESTIONS?
