Victorian SMOKE ROOM CIGAR ENGLISH PUB GLASS WINDOWThis glass is from the 1870 time frame when Pub customers would go into a separate Smoking room behind a sturdy oak door to have a drink and smoke their cigar or pipe away from the Pub chatter.Acid Etched Glass is very beautiful and I can see this piece hanging in an exclusive Cigar lounge or club. Acid etching is a chemical process used to create texture and design in glass panels by removing the top surface of specifically selected areas. Victorian period acid etching was done by coating glass with a resistant material such as paraffin, carving out the design with a sharp instrument, and then dissolving the exposed glass areas with hydrofluoric acid. This process was time consuming and extremely hazardous.He bought this in London 30 years ago and had it mounted in a sturdy oak frame.
